The association was formed to improve the health and well-being of people who use drugs by working with medical personnel to access drug use education, research, clinical guidelines care and current policy. The association conducts regular professional development, provides a blog and publishes the peer-reviewed, "Substance Abuse Journal". Special interest groups include Adolescents and Young Adults, and Medication for Substance Use Disorders.
