Statistics describing what’s really happening in our community with alcohol and drugs

Statistics can effectively help explain why people should be concerned about alcohol and other drugs (AOD). However, it’s important to use statistics from the best data sets available and to avoid presenting them in a way that exaggerates the situation.

The Australian Drug Information Network has gathered some statics with this criterion in mind to help you describe how everyone in Australia is affected at some stage of their life by AOD.

Here’s a snapshot from our new infographic:

  • Around 1 in 5 Australians (over 14) drink at levels that put them at risk over their lifetime
  • More than 5 people a year lose their life to overdose
  • Pharmaceutical drug misuse is increasing and oxycodone is now the 7th leading drug prescribed in general practice.
