Community-based programs, such as outreach and in-school services, also play an important prevention and early intervention role and are effective in extending a connection to both the young and the elderly and to those not typically engaged with health services. Review: Residential rehab and recreational intervention programs for Indigenous youth aged 12–24 years who are experiencing problematic use of alcohol, other drugs or inhalants. Many of the participants have participated in criminal activity, the youth justice system or have been diverted by the courts. The Bushmob models offers at-risk youth opportunities to have multiple entry and exit points. There are outreach projects and early intervention programs for Indigenous young people and their families in rural and remote communities. Programs are diverse including residential, bush adverture therapy, a multi-faceted media initiative, support for children and schooling, a horse/culture/healing initiative, and dedicated work to engage elders and other mentors.

Review: Independent not-for-profit organisation with volunteers who donate their time to patrol the Brisbane CBD, Fortitude Valley and Caxton Street precincts, watching out for anyone in crisis, at risk or in need. Services include crisis intervention, conflict resolution, front-line first aid (including alcohol or drug overdose), public counselling and guidance, secondary victim support and welfare assistance. This rapid response service works in partnership with other official services - Police, Ambulance, City Council, venue management and security, and taxi operations. A practical outreach, prevention and harm reduction community service supporting people to party safely.
